Artist Off The Vine: Play Center’s Fun With Rock & Roll Toys

September 19, 2018 by No Comments

Sometimes it is important to remember that rock and roll ultimately is about having fun. Musicians with day jobs or even those consumed with tasks to manage their social media and other career steps know that the daytime has enough stressors of its own. Sometimes you want to just listen and have fun. Sometimes you just want to play.

Events: Kenny Howes & Friends Perform Beatles ’68 –
Don’t Pass This By.

September 17, 2018 by No Comments

1968 was a tumultuous year across the globe from the Prague Spring to the Vietnam War to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy. It was also a banner year for The Beatles as they created a profusion of new material and enjoyed continued world topping success.

Fifty years later, we have the opportunity to relish in one of their most prolific years as nationally acclaimed and prominent Atlanta musician Kenny Howes gathers a core group of musicians and friends to perform “Beatles ‘68”, a faithful recreation of many of the Fab Four’s songs released in that year at Avondale Towne Cinema on Friday, September 22 at 7:00PM.

Artist Off The Vine: Virginia Schenck/VA And The Uniting Appeal Of Jazz

September 13, 2018 by No Comments

Virginia Schenck – or VA – is a master of nuance – of bringing subtlety and beauty to the music she creates whether she is covering a classic or improvising an original. Her passion is listening – to silence, music, life sounds and finding a way to bring that into her world to create something special and enduring.

Artist Off The Vine: Investigating Big Murder

September 11, 2018 by No Comments

Big Murder sounds a little frightening. But if you want to know “Who done it?” you have to look no further than Marcus David, the front man and guitarist for the band, and you’ll find a mastermind of weaving together musical influences to create rocking original tunes.

Artist Spotlight: Flashback Flash And Creating New Vintage Rock

August 27, 2018 by No Comments

Flashback Flash’s website kicks off with the following declaration “Flashback Flash is vintage rock for the modern listener. They will make you feel a pleasant nostalgia of something that may not have happened.” At first, it might not be clear what they mean by that, but when they play live, the seemingly contradictory statement immediately makes sense. It is evident that the four guys in Flashback Flash – Alex Chamis (lead vocals, guitar) [Alex C], Casey Dorreity (bass), Josh Brazinski (guitar, vocals), and Alex May (drums) [Alex M] – can ingest a bundle of contradictions and make them their own, allowing for bigger, deeper, more interesting music output.

Right before lunch I get in the car and turn on WABE. I hear a familiar voice and music behind it. I cannot believe what I am hearing out of the speakers and it catches me off guard a minute. “I have that record!” It is none other than Kyle Gordon of our favorite MammaBear in an interview on City Lights. Way to go Lois!
It is already time to start working for the weekend! The annual Summer Shade Festival is a wonderful kickoff to more pleasant weather outdoor entertainment. Among all the music and art are some of our favorite people including Lynx Deluxe Saturday at 3:20PM – they always deliver on stage with their batch of energetic tunes. Also check out Rare Birds Sunday at 4:00PM and James Hall & The Steady Wicked at 7:45PM. See the festival website for a full schedule!
Look at this sweet line up playing right now! It’s free!
This week marks the release of ‘Free Radical’, the fourth full-length studio album from MammaBear, the music project led by Kyle Gordon, who wrote and sings lead on all seven of the tunes, in addition to contributing drums and percussion, guitars, and bass. ‘Free Radical’ was originally recorded at Gordon’s home on an 8-track recorder during the pandemic and later finished in the studio, supported by renown local allies Benjamin J. Davidow (Gas Hound, Phantom Electric, The Buzzards of Fuzz), Josh Longino (Disapyramids, Gringo Star), and Tony W. Belser (Bloodplums), whose talents give this record a real band vibe.
There is so much good music happening all around Atlanta this holiday weekend. One show to which you should treat yourself is on Saturday September 4 as Smith’s Old Bar hosts The Ladies Of…
For a few years now we have enjoyed recordings by MammaBear, full of ear-grabbing buzzy licks and an easy, nonchalant hookiness and cool vibe.
